This is the story of Miralem Durić, a teacher from Jajce. Since 1969, he has been walking from Jajce to the village of Bešupolje every day, and in that village, for decades, he has been teaching children primary education. The village of Bešupolje is 22 kilometers away from Jajce, and the journey that Miralem covers on foot takes 3-4 hours every day.
It is a road that leads through Bosnian forests, a path that is covered in snow in winter. And through the snow, often breaking through a ravine; and in the rain, freezing and wet; and in the sun and high temperatures, the teacher has been walking for thirty-five years, and for thirty-five autumns, winters and springs, the children of Bešupolje have had a teacher.
Considering how small a teacher's salary is, his motive is certainly not money. His motive is very clear; if he does not do this, the children would not have the opportunity to complete their primary education, because there is no bus or other line to the village of Bešupolje. Abandoned by everyone, but not by his teacher, the village currently has eleven students.
Eleven students and a walking teacher...
